Melissa Harris-Perry, an MSNBC newscaster and a professor at Wake Forest University, is the subject of an IRS tax lien for $70,000 according to several news sources. The Winston-Salem Journal noted that the lien was filed in the Forsyth County Hall of Justice earlier this month, and named Harris-Perry and her husband, James.
The IRS wields substantial power to collect back taxes. This includes the ability to place a lien against your assets, levy (seize) your bank accounts and investments or garnish your wages and income. The $70,000 lien is linked to taxes owed from 2013. Ms. Harris-Perry was unaware that the lien had been filed, but stated that her husband had recently paid a large amount to the IRS, and that they were working to repay the balance.
