A recent report out of South Dakota asserted that the IRS has shortened the amount of time it allows US taxpayers for responding to requests from the IRS during an audit. The report quotes a timeframe of 15 days for the taxpayer to respond or the IRS will send a report detailing the taxes due.
This follows several recent news reports on the heels of IRS Commissioner John Koskinen’s recent order to increase the speed with which audits are conducted due to recent budget cuts. The New York Times recently noted a practice of the IRS sending an audit notification letter, and a letter threatening the taxpayer for a failure to respond to the notification on the same day. The taxpayer has just received a first letter from the IRS, when a second letter arrives telling them their failure to respond will result in their loss of a right to appeal, sending them to tax court (where less than 10% of tax payers achieve any level of victory).
